"He is one of the stupidest people who ever lived," I confided in Jayne a few days later. George, very busy with various drills and trainings, hadn't responded to the message I'd sent upon my arrival, but I had no qualms confiding in my big sister.

"You have no regrets about your decision to turn him down?"

"Even fewer than before, if that's possible." I frowned, examining Jayne's pretty face on my screen. She looked tired. Her face was drawn, dark smudges of color under her eyes, and in spite of her generally upbeat manner, she spoke with an undercurrent of fatigue.

Jayne was fundamentally unhappy. And I had no idea what to do. When we were linked, it was easier to tell what she needed, but at this distance I only had my instincts to guide me. Did I ask about it? Did I bring up Caro? Or was it better to stay quiet and let her deal with it in her own way?

But then she brought it up herself. "I finally heard back from Caro," she said.

"Oh?" I tried to keep my expression neutral. "How's she doing?"

"It sounds like she's good." She paused. "She's with Will's sister Octavia right now on the Darcy family estate. She sounds busy." She paused again. "It was a brief message."

"Oh." Poor Jayne.

"So that's that then." She was trying to look bright, but her voice shook. "It's not like I thought it would be easy to maintain our friendship from a distance," she added hastily. "And there is little likelihood we'll ever see each other again."

"It's okay if you're disappointed, Jayne."

Jayne shook her head. "No, it's not. Besides, everything is fine, Lizzie. My distance courses are going well, and I'm going out with Florian several times a week. I'm even thinking of beginning a new VR project." She gave me her best smile. "It's really all right."

"A new project? How exciting!" And I fake smiled back, even though on the inside I was seething. Stupid Caro, breaking the heart of someone so sweet and innocent. If it had been me, I would have raged through the pain and ended up all right. But Jayne wasn't like me. Jayne would make endless excuses for Caro's behavior, and she'd think of every single thing she'd done "wrong" in the relationship. Eventually she'd bounce back—I had to believe that—but I wasn't there when she needed me most.

It made me wonder what else I'd have to sacrifice for my dreams.
